It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. Robert Carter was born and raised in Chicago. He began his career there as a sketch artist, until a move to New York City in 1910, courtesy of William Randolph Hearst and the New York American. Regarded as one of America's great cartoonists, Carter's work included strip comics and political cartoons that showcased his knowledge of composition and anatomy.
